Each year the Solar – Cinematic Art Gallery works closely with Curtas Vila do Conde to present an exhibition during the festival and create a dialogue between the works which feature in it and the contents of the film programme. Last year the “Terra” exhibition focussed on the careers of an emerging generation of Portuguese artists: now in 2018 Solar is turning to Spanish art, bringing together seven promising artists – Carla Andrade, Inés García, Laida Lertxundi, Lois Patiño, Natalia Marín, Samuel M. Delgado and Helena Girón – whose work it has been following in recent years. The work of some of these artists has already been seen, either in the gallery itself in individual exhibitions or as part of the official Curtas Vila do Conde programme. Commissioned by José Manuel Lopez, a Galician curator, and Nuno Rodrigues, the “New Spain” group exhibition questions the fixity of place, from (beyond) the place of creation, since most of the artists work outside their own country, and also from (beyond) the traditional place of cinema, exploring the boundaries between film and the visual arts in multimedia installations. The parallel New Spain programme includes two sessions programmed by Gonzalo de Pedro and Maria Palácios Cruz, Spanish curators who also work outside the Spanish borders, and ends with an expanded cinema performance by Adriana Vila and Luis Macías which promises to displace film from its traditional settings.
